Magna Electric Vehicle Structures (MEVS) is making a major EV battery production investment of $426 million in a second state-of-the art manufacturing facility in St. Clair County, Michigan.  The facility constructed in the St. Clair Industrial Park in 2021 will be expanded by 740,000 square feet to provide greater e-coating capability, and production and warehousing capacity. The expansion will result in 920 new jobs being created over three years.

Magna Electric Vehicle Structures will be receiving $44 million in state and local incentives.  Additionally, a new 500,000-gallon water tower and other water system and road improvements will be built to accommodate the plant.

The existing recently built Magna facility in the City of St. Clair is 345,000 square-feet.  Magna broke ground on the facility in February of 2021.  It was built to produce complex battery enclosures for the 2022 BT1XX platform which includes the GMC Hummer EV.  The combined total with the new 740,000 square-foot expansion will give Magna over a one million square-foot facility in St. Clair County.

“The City of St. Clair is very excited to have won this significant project.  So many states and communities are competing for projects in the growing EV sector,” said City of St. Clair Mayor, Bill Cedar.  “I’m extremely proud of our city council, county officials and economic development partners for aggressively competing to win the Magna project.”

“The confidence Magna has shown in our community for this expansion is a tribute to our region’s strong automotive manufacturing success and DNA,” said Dan Casey, CEO of the Economic Development Alliance.  “We are on the cusp of growing EV industry trends across the globe, and St. Clair County is glad to be a small part of the industry’s growth, as well as ensuring mobility and electric diversification in our region that will provide jobs for our residents for years to come.”
