Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Underground Fiber Construction Technician with hands-on experience in:
- Plowing fiber
- Directional boring (HDD)
- Trenching and excavating
- Blowing fiber cable
- Site restoration (landscape, pavement, concrete, etc.)
- This is a field-based role that will involve daily operation of construction equipment, working in various soil and terrain conditions, and collaborating with project managers, inspectors, and other team members. You’ll play a critical role in laying the groundwork — literally — for Duke Broadband’s fiber infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fiber Installation & Construction
- Safely operate heavy equipment including:
- Directional drills (Ditch Witch/Vermeer)
- Plows and trenchers
- Excavators, mini-excavators, and backhoes
- Fiber blowing machines
- Install innerduct, conduit, handholes, pedestals, vaults, and other underground components according to engineered drawings.
- Perform fiber cable blowing or pulling through conduit systems, ensuring minimum stress and maximum integrity.
- Utility Locating & Damage Prevention
- Read and interpret utility locates, prints, and construction plans.
- Perform potholing to safely expose and verify existing underground utilities.
- Use electronic locators and hand-digging methods to prevent utility strikes.
- Restoration & Site Management
- Backfill trenches and bore pits; perform site cleanup and restoration to pre-construction condition.
- Restore landscaping (grass, mulch, sod), pavement (asphalt, concrete), and hardscape features as required.
- Maintain accurate job documentation, including pictures, measurements, and notes for each completed job.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum 2–3 years of underground utility construction experience
- Experience with:
- Directional boring
- Plowing and trenching
- Blowing fiber
- Site restoration
- Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with construction equipment
- Ability to read and follow construction blueprints and utility maps
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and lifting up to 50 lbs
- Valid Driver’s License (CDL preferred or ability to obtain)
