Under general supervision, the Operations Technician I (Miss Dig) plays a critical role in supporting SEMCO Energy's Operations Department by performing a wide range of field responsibilities across a designated geographic area.

This position is essential to ensuring the safe and efficient maintenance of underground utility infrastructure through accurate locating, thorough documentation, and active participation in damage prevention efforts. The technician collaborates across departments, upholds compliance with industry regulations, including Public Act 174, and contributes to system upkeep, inspections, and various operational activities that protect community safety and support reliable gas distribution.

You Will

  • Correctly complete locating requests meeting timeline requirements.
  • Complete proper documentation of locating requests.
  • Coordinate third-party pipeline crossing inspections.
  • Participate in SEMCO's Damage Prevention Awareness Program.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of Public Act 174 (MISS DIG Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act).
  • Assist in other operational departments when required, which may include inspection, leak survey, and collections.
  • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of gas distribution systems.
  • Adhere to SEMCO's internal control policies and procedures, and financial processes.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field.

You Have

  • High school diploma or GED required. College courses or vocational training in drafting, surveying, electrical circuits wiring, or other related fields preferred.
  • 2-4 years of gas distribution experience required.
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License and eligible for company-provided vehicle insurance.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical & electrical principles is preferred.
  • Capable of completing the Operator Qualification Program upon hire.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications. Ability to learn new systems or software packages as necessary.
