SEMCO Energy is seeking a Financial Analyst for our Regulatory Accounting team! Reporting to the Manager of Regulatory Accounting, the Financial Analyst is responsible for a variety of tasks surrounding accounting, primarily gas accounting, completing account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and financial analysis. This position is based in our Port Huron corporate office.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly gas cost accruals, unbilled revenue accruals, and gas choice customer offset entries; create and maintain monthly files/workbooks to support these entries; gather and analyze data from various internal and external sources, ensuring accuracy and precision.
  • Ensure data integrity for inclusion in annual regulatory filings, subject to review by regulators and third parties.
  • Manage and maintain the gas-in storage workbook for each storage field monthly.
  • Process the monthly gas invoices.  This includes pulling invoices and support from various sources, coding the invoices for payment, and monitoring the flow of the invoices through the approval process to ensure timely payment.    
  • Prepare approximately nine pipeline reconciliations monthly, ensuring volumes and dollars agree to the General Ledger. 
  • Participate in preparing and presenting the monthly gas cost billing factor process.
  • Support monthly and annual gas-related regulatory filings which may include building exhibits, preparing testimony, and responding effectively to external requests surrounding the work product.
  • Prepare other miscellaneous monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting. 
  • Provide back-up for the Company’s daily treasury duties which include determining cash position and executing electronic payments.  Determine procurement of funds and monitor investments and collections.
  • Provide support for both internal and external auditors, including regulatory auditors.
  • Participate in reviewing, analyzing, and implementing new accounting standards.
  • Follow company procedures to ensure compliance with internal controls (SOX standards).
  • Maintain professional and technical industry and financial knowledge to uphold responsibilities as subject matter expert.  
  • Participate in accounting projects if required, making regular reports to management.
