We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to join our team and take ownership of the company’s financial operations. This position is vital to maintaining our company’s fiscal health, ensuring compliance, and supporting long-term growth. The Controller will also oversee risk management and insurance responsibilities, working closely with HR, operations, and ownership.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Oversight

  • Maintain accurate and timely financial records
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal reporting standards

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process
  • Monitor financial performance against budget
  • Develop cash flow forecasts and support scenario planning

Accounts & Job Costing

  • Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
  • Monitor collections and vendor payments
  • Manage project/job costing and track profitability by customer and service line

Payroll & Benefits

  • Oversee payroll processing in collaboration with HR
  • Maintain accurate payroll data for reporting and compliance
  • Track and audit monthly payroll records for insurance reporting

Tax & Compliance

  • Prepare for and coordinate with external CPA for annual filings and audits
  • Manage sales tax, business licenses, and other financial compliance requirements

Insurance & Risk Management

General Liability, Workers’ Comp, and Vehicle Insurance

  • Work with HR and insurance carriers to add/remove drivers and vehicle information
  • Maintain up-to-date vehicle registrations
  • Contact the insurance company regarding any vehicle-related accidents or claims
  • Track and compile monthly payroll data for workers’ comp and liability insurance audits
  • Keep all insurance policies organized and updated with new amendments or endorsements

Contract & COI Review

  • Review and manage certificates of insurance (COIs) for annual renewals
  • Perform contract reviews to ensure insurance coverage meets contractual obligations

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Recommend and implement improvements to financial systems and tools
  • Help streamline accounting workflows, job costing, and reporting structures
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls Strategic Contributions
  • Provide financial insight and analysis to company leadership
  • Support pricing strategies and margin analysis
  • Evaluate financial risk and advise on strategic decisions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA a plus)
  • 5+ years of experience in a construction or contracting company preferred
  • Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP schedules, and construction accounting
  • Familiar with QuickBooks financial software
  • Experience with commercial insurance and risk management is a strong plus
