MMTC Training Class: 8D Problem Solving

The Economic Development Alliance (EDA) of St. Clair County is pleased to partner with the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC) to bring seven MMTC training classes to Port Huron. These classes are designed to support talent growth to benefit your manufacturing operations. 

8D Problem Solving

This one-day interactive course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to take a problem through a process involving tools such as 5-Whys, Brainstorming,
Fishbone Diagrams, and others. This training will orient participants to the problem solving basics and 8-D reporting methods. Discussions and exercises involving problem solving
tools are part of this course.

The following topics are reviewed:

  • PDCA cycle

  • Forming teams, team problem solving works better

  • Brainstorming overview, brainstorming exercise

  • Affinity

  • The 5-Why methodology overview

  • Teams formed; each team selects a problem from a list of 10 problems

  • Each team takes their selected problem through 4 problem solving tools

  • Scatter Diagram overview, Scatter Diagram exercise involving analysis of automobile values, continuation of this same study using added data exercise more problem-solving tools

  • Internal problem – yield issue exercise

  • Beginning with the disciplined problem-solving documentation process. the 8-D process is followed

Learning Outcomes:
After attending this course, learners will have received the knowledge and tools needed to objectively identify the problem, isolate the root cause, and document the entire process.

The learner will be able to:

  • Discuss requirements of disciplined problem solving methods such as 8-D.

  • Have the ability to practice problem solving tools such as:

    • Brainstorming

    • Cause & Effect (fishbone) analysis

    • Scatter diagraming

    • 5-Whys and the 3 legged 5-Why Process

    • Flow Chart a Process, etc.

  • Define the interrelationship of root cause analysis and problem solving
