Tri-Share Child Care Program
MI Tri-Share Child Care Pilot Project
AVAILABLE TO ST. CLAIR COUNTY COMPANIES AND THEIR ELIGIBLE EMPLOYEES
The MI Tri-Share Child Care Pilot Program (Tri-Share) is an innovative approach to increasing access to high quality, affordable child care for working families, while also helping to retain talent and remove one major barrier to employment.
Through Tri-Share, the cost of child care is shared equally by an eligible employee, their employer, and the State of Michigan. For example, under this program, an employee paying $9,000 in annual child care services will now pay $3,000, the employer will cover $3,000, and the State of Michigan will cover $3,000.
The Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County and the St. Clair County RESA partnered to bring Tri-Share to St. Clair County to benefit businesses and working families.
Why Participate in Tri-Share?
- Help eligible employees who are working parents see a reduction in their child care expenses
- Bring more people back into the labor force who can’t rejoin due to the cost of child care
- Be seen as an “employer of choice” by current and prospective employees
What are Some of the Employer Requirements?
- Must be located in St. Clair County
- Will make the program available to eligible employees with dependent children ages 0-12
- Create a new employee benefit to cover 33.33% of the cost of the eligible employee’s child care cost
- Set up the employee payment using payroll deduction
- Provide a monthly payment to St. Clair County RESA for 2/3 of the cost of child care (employer and employee portion)
What is an Eligible Employee?
Employee eligibility is determined based on the employee’s family size and total household income. Employees must have a total household income between 200% and 325% of the Federal Poverty Level. See the chart below for household income ranges. Employees must not be eligible for the Development and Care Program (commonly referred to as child care subsidy). Once an employee is deemed eligible, they are eligible for the entire year of the pilot program.
