Cargill Invests $68 Million in facility and technology upgrades

October 1, 2022

Cargill, North America’s trusted supplier in salt, is making a strategic $68 million investment in its St. Clair
facility. Operating for over 100 years in St. Clair County, the Cargill salt plant is unique, in that it’s the
only Alberger® salt producer in the world. The high-demand Alberger® salt flakes produced at the plant
are shipped worldwide. Investments being made by Cargill, will enhance the plant’s production capacity
through increased automation, new technology and efficiency improvements. Part of the multi-year
improvement project also includes construction of a new 50,000 square-foot evaporation facility to house
a state-of-the-art dry processing line expected to reduce waste and increase capacity by up to 40%. The
facility expansion and upgrades will allow Cargill, one of the region’s top employers, to retain high-quality
jobs and maintain the company’s contributions to the economic vitality of the region. The City of St. Clair
awarded the project a 12-year real property tax abatement on the new construction. EDA worked closely
with the company and their consultants to secure the abatements for the expansion.
